Why Social Media Will End the World of Advertising

social media will kill advertisingAdvertising is all about getting the right message to the right people. Herein lies the challenge – getting to the right people. Current advertising tactics like billboards could easily become a thing of the past. Billboards are not targeted and they cost a ton. Newspaper, radio, television ads are all in the same boat.

The beauty of social media is that it is bringing people with common interests together. There is a community and conversation going on for everything – golf, music, home décor, twins, clothing and millions more for nearly everything. You can find online communities everywhere, Facebook houses a ton, topic hashtags on Twitter, forums everywhere, and Youtube is another powerhouse. Businesses simply need to start listening, and tapping into these conversations.

So where does advertising see its end? Social media is free, people are grouping on their own. Getting the message to right people has become free, and easy. Here’s a perfect example, The Michael Jackson fan page on Facebook has nearly 25 million fans. One, free, simple little post on this fan page hits 25 million fans and their friends instantaneously. The more comments this little post generates, the further the message reaches, and the more exposure it gets. Tell me another way to hit this many people for free?

Our advice? If you haven’t already, start thinking about the power of social media for advertising. It’s not a fad, it’s here to stay, and if you’re an advertiser who isn’t using social media in your campaigns – you may become a thing of the past.

Content Writing and SEO

writing seo blog postsLet’s face it, content is king. Like many bloggers out there, I’m always looking for ways to quickly charge up the search engine rankings. Over the past 5 years of blogging and working on websites, I have come up with some pretty solid strategies for content writing that anyone and everyone should abide by. Here’s a few to get you started:

What’s your competition up to?

What keywords are you after? Maternity photography? Rocky road ice cream? Pink plush pillows? Take some time and do a little research into what your competition has done, review the top ten listings on Google and read their content – write down any trends you discover.

What makes you unique?

Take some time and write down at least five specific things that make you, your company or your services unique. This is your competitive advantage, this is what you need to write about.

How quickly do you get your point across?

Website visitors have short attention spans, if your content isn’t easy to follow or understand within the first 10 seconds landing on your page, you need to write better content. Great content titles to consider are product reviews, top five or ten lists, “how to” posts, and versus comparisons.

How good are your titles?

Good titles contain keywords and get your point across. Think of it this way, your title must speak to your readers, and the search engine robots. Now don’t go plugging your titles full of keywords just for the sake of it, that won’t get you anywhere. Write titles with good keywords that describe your content – and stick with it.

Getting your rankings to climb will require some time, but if you use these simple tips when writing your web content, you’re on the right track.

Industrial SEO Strategies for Large Websites – SMX East

Search Engine Marketing Expo New York

When it comes to large websites the process behind search engine optimization and the check-list of do’s and don’ts becomes a greater challenge. Not to mention the time spent convincing the boss that SEO is not only another pretty acronym but that is should be included in the budgetting sheets. (Ever wonder how an SEO spends his/her time?)

But do not despair! I had the pleasure of attending the Industrial Strength SEO presentation at SMX East in New York last week. Cleaning up the presentation was Tom Petryshen from Amplify – Australia based search marketing experts. I met Tom at SMX West in Seattle earlier this year and after chatting with him I couldn’t wait to see what he had cooking for SMX East. Read the rest of this entry »

Google Instant Update, SEO, User Behavior – SMX East

Search Engine Marketing Expo New YorkI love reading the forums on Google instant. It’s like a drama series for web geeks that has just started and everyone is predicting where the series is going but no one really knows what’s going on yet. A few “the sky is falling” scenarios (linkbait perhaps) but in general there is some confusion.

In yesterday’s session with Google on the updates to the Keywords Research Tool, Google Instant questions were brought up, it was apparent that there is potential in multiple google tools for the compression of long-tail keywords. Although the Google representative passionately responded “NO! We love the long-tail and would never kill it!”.

The research presented about site traffic before and after of Google Instant showed a trend in increased traffic overall (to the tested sites), but based on fewer keywords. Although this is preliminary it says to me that the guys and gals who are good at SEO are benefiting from the optimization of head or mid key-terms/phrases. Once again, the compression of the long-tail.

Lets hear what the pro’s have to say about this. The session is about to begin for Google Instant’s Impact On SEO & User Behavior. Read the rest of this entry »
