Why Social Media Will End the World of Advertising

social media will kill advertisingAdvertising is all about getting the right message to the right people. Herein lies the challenge – getting to the right people. Current advertising tactics like billboards could easily become a thing of the past. Billboards are not targeted and they cost a ton. Newspaper, radio, television ads are all in the same boat.

The beauty of social media is that it is bringing people with common interests together. There is a community and conversation going on for everything – golf, music, home décor, twins, clothing and millions more for nearly everything. You can find online communities everywhere, Facebook houses a ton, topic hashtags on Twitter, forums everywhere, and Youtube is another powerhouse. Businesses simply need to start listening, and tapping into these conversations.

So where does advertising see its end? Social media is free, people are grouping on their own. Getting the message to right people has become free, and easy. Here’s a perfect example, The Michael Jackson fan page on Facebook has nearly 25 million fans. One, free, simple little post on this fan page hits 25 million fans and their friends instantaneously. The more comments this little post generates, the further the message reaches, and the more exposure it gets. Tell me another way to hit this many people for free?

Our advice? If you haven’t already, start thinking about the power of social media for advertising. It’s not a fad, it’s here to stay, and if you’re an advertiser who isn’t using social media in your campaigns – you may become a thing of the past.

Going Viral

social media and viral videosThere’s been a lot of talk over the past few years about going viral. But what does it take? How do you make a viral video? Well, let me stop you right there. There is no secret formula for going viral. There are however, similarities between the videos that do.

With the emergence of many new social media networking platforms and their inter-connectivity through “like” and “share” buttons going viral is becoming easier than every before. This inter-connectivity is bringing people together, and creating new communities in every corner of the web.

So what’s common across almost all viral videos? Really only four things:

• An initial launch in an online community, with connections to place like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and more.

• A unique and interesting angle or concept.

• It becomes a topic of conversation.

• A celebrity, or someone with a lot of connections shares the video.

These commonalities are not absolute, but it covers the brunt of viral videos out there. The Numa Numa Dance on Youtube, The Old Spice “ The Man Your Man Could Smell Like”, Diet Coke and Mentos and so many more follow these simple rules.

Here’s the final thing to keep in mind, the makers of viral videos never intended them to be as such big hits as they were. You can’t make something go viral, it has to happen on it’s own.

Why Facebook May Just Kill Gmail

When it comes to social media marketing, Facebook is a huge powerhouse. Now with Facebook launching the initial details behind their Facebook Mail this past Monday, there is no doubt in our minds that they will retain their powerhouse status.

Facebook Mail’s biggest feature, besides tying in to your personal Facebook profile is its ability to categorize your e-mail. Here’s the deal. As a default, you only see the e-mails or messages from people who are your friends; anything else gets filtered into a separate folder.  Say goodbye to spam. You can also customize which e-mails get sent where from senders outside of your Facebook friendslists.

Facebook Mail will also combine all of your emails, Facebook messages, SMS and other chats and conversations in one place. This one-stop-shop is aptly being called the “Social Inbox”. This simple inter-connectivity would allow you to interact on twitter from Facebook, or your phone or anywhere. The point is – Facebook is working to become the hub for all social communities, messaging and e-mail online.

Zuckerberg insists this new feature won’t make Gmail obsolete, but it’s really hard to say, if Facebook create the ultimate “social inbox tool”, it may do just that.

Social Media Tip of the Day or So – Negative Feedback

online marketing social mediaNegative comments and reviews are great opportunities!

Still to this day, many companies are apprehensive about allowing customers to freely post their opinions, reviews and comments about their products. Why? Because they fear the feedback may be negative. Don’t let this happen to you.

Let’s face it, no matter what service you offer, you can’t please absolutely everyone. No one expects every bit of feedback to be positive. For example, how often do you see 100% positive ratings for big sellers on eBay? Over the past few years, there’s been a movement towards allowing customers to speak openly about the products and services they use – this helps build credibility.

Turn “constructive” feedback into a positive customer experience.

Let’s face it; you have a customer who’s engaged enough in your products or services to actually write a negative review or rating. Reply directly and publicly – acknowledge their complaints, empathize with their situation, and try to offer a solution. Turn the unhappy customer into a happy one. Not only do you gain valuable customer insight, but you may be answering a question that many of your customers may have.

You may recall the story of Comcast and Twitter. A customer complained about a customer service issue with Comcast on Twitter, this snowballed and over the next few months, Comcast developed a Twitter profile and began interacting, communicating and helping its customers directly. Customer satisfaction went through the roof, and Comcast regained its image as a company that cared about its customers.

Here’s a good rule of thumb, if the comment is positive, thank the commenter, if it’s negative, thank the commenter and try to offer a solution, if the comment uses abusive language, delete it.

Social Media – The 15 Minute Plan

A common misconception I hear about social media is that it doesn’t cost anything. Unfortunately that’s only partly true. A simple social media program doesn’t necessarily need to cost much money but there is definitely a time factor involved. In social media, time is just as (if not more) important than money. ||more on social media
