Why Social Media Will End the World of Advertising

social media will kill advertisingAdvertising is all about getting the right message to the right people. Herein lies the challenge – getting to the right people. Current advertising tactics like billboards could easily become a thing of the past. Billboards are not targeted and they cost a ton. Newspaper, radio, television ads are all in the same boat.

The beauty of social media is that it is bringing people with common interests together. There is a community and conversation going on for everything – golf, music, home décor, twins, clothing and millions more for nearly everything. You can find online communities everywhere, Facebook houses a ton, topic hashtags on Twitter, forums everywhere, and Youtube is another powerhouse. Businesses simply need to start listening, and tapping into these conversations.

So where does advertising see its end? Social media is free, people are grouping on their own. Getting the message to right people has become free, and easy. Here’s a perfect example, The Michael Jackson fan page on Facebook has nearly 25 million fans. One, free, simple little post on this fan page hits 25 million fans and their friends instantaneously. The more comments this little post generates, the further the message reaches, and the more exposure it gets. Tell me another way to hit this many people for free?

Our advice? If you haven’t already, start thinking about the power of social media for advertising. It’s not a fad, it’s here to stay, and if you’re an advertiser who isn’t using social media in your campaigns – you may become a thing of the past.

Custom Facebook Pages & FBML

Is HTML a dying language? Many bloggers and website developers nowadays have little knowledge of HTML coding. Facebook has brought it back.  But even then, there are many companies offering tools to create custom Facebook pages without the need to know HTML.

how to custome facebook pages

So depending on your coding skill there’s a Facebook option for you to create a totally awesome landing page.  If you’re a skillful coder and know HTML, FBML is a breeze.  It’s basically an open dialog box that accepts script.  Upload your images to a server, write in your script, save it, test it and you’ve got a custom Facebook Page, great for anything from contests, landing pages, e-newsletter sign-up and more.

Not a coder? There are intuitive and simple to use programs and add-ons (see the link above) that will make unique and interesting landing pages that can dramatically improve your “liking” ability.  For the best pages and add-ons however, it will cost you.

So really it’s a question of knowledge vs. cost.  Using FBML is free, and talented designers can use it to make some cool pages.  But, for some real knock-out pages, you may want to consider paying a little extra, especially if you’re sending a whole bunch of traffic to your page from a large Facebook ad campaign.

So, what’s it going to be?

Stuff We’re Trying – Animoto.com

Animoto is a video create websiteIt’s a really exciting time to be a web guy. New products, services and sites are emerging on a daily basis. It can be a pretty daunting task to keep up with everything but each new release triggers new ideas… and ultimately more new products. The SBX Media team keeps a pretty close eye on what’s new and exciting and we’re always trying things out. Today I thought I’d focus on a site that we use quite a bit – a site you might want to consider as well.

Animoto.com is a video editing/creation site that’s really easy to use. The site allows you to create professional looking, montage style videos using video clips, photos and text.

Getting started is pretty easy. Animoto.com is free to use… although there is a paid membership available for those who want to take advantage of additional video templates. Simply choose a template, upload your pictures and video, edit them online, add some royalty-free music (included) and let the site work some magic. You’ll have a new video on the way in under 10 minutes.

We discovered Animoto.com about 8 months ago and now use it on a regular basis. We’ve opted to go for the paid membership and haven’t had any complaints so far. The site is really easy to use and we’re very happy with the videos we’ve been able to produce.

Looking for a way to turn your raw videos and images into something special? Check out Animoto!

Here’s a video we put together using Animoto.
