10 Cool Things I Learn About Twitter #TimeSci

Today I wanted to share with you some things I learned from a really awesome seminar I recently attend called: The Science of Timing. In this post I’m share 10 cool things I learned about Twitter. Keep an eye out for similar posts on timing for blog posts, e-mails and Facebook. Enjoy!

  1. Add a “+” symbol to other peoples’ shortened bit.ly links to see how many clicks they got.
  2. Using the words “official”, “founder”, “speaker” in your Twitter description gets you around 170-210 more followers than the average. Using words like “author”, “guru” gets you around 90 more followers than average.
  3. Retweets occur most often on your afternoon coffee break – between 2-5pm ET. On the other hand, the least favorable retweeting time is 8-10am.  Retweeting starts to drop off severely at 2am.
  4. Wednesday – Friday is a much more effective time get retweets than earlier in the week.
  5. People who tweet 22 times per day have the most followers.
  6. When it comes to clicks on Twitter, Monday is the worst day to get traffic from Twitter, Tuesday and Wednesday are the best. Clicks are pretty steady on the weekends as well, outpacing Monday’s and Thursdays.
  7. Clicks are at their lowest early morning, but peak just before lunchtime and between 4-6pm.
  8. If you’re looking for clicks on Twitter, tweet less often. One tweet per hour gets a 300% increase in CTR than five or more tweets per hour.
  9. Check out www.tweetwhen.com to find your optimal retweeting time.
  10. If you want to tweet the same link multiple times, change up the content / message significantly to avoid appearing spam-like, and to help get attention. Not to mention Twitter doesn;t allow you tweet exactly the same thing twice.

5 Easy Ways to Build your Twitter Following

Twitter is a simple yet powerful marketing and networking tool. Building a following takes time and persistence. For most people Twitter may be a little overwhelming, it’s power of it however is undeniable. Twitter spreads news faster than CNN. The trick to getting your message out there is to have an attentive following. Short of buying followers (strongly frowned upon, and can possibly get you banned from Twitter), what are the best ways to gain followers?

Here’s our list of five easy ways to build your Twitter following:

1) Broadcast That You’re on Twitter

Seems like a no-brainer I’m sure, but hear me out. Most people don’t broadcast their Twitter presence nearly enough. Share your “Follow Me” Twitter link on your website/blog, Facebook page, LinkedIn profile, business cards, e-mail signatures, conference presentations, articles and any and every other place you can think of.

2) Follow Influential People in Your Topic

Use Twitter’s search function to look for specific words related to your industry. Follow the leaders that appear in the search results. Ask them questions, join the conversation, and get involved as much as possible. Your followers will come.

3) Use Hashtags

This is a hashtag: #marketing. Twitter uses these to help categorize and give context to conversations. It’s also one of the biggest things people search for when looking for followers. If you’re an expert dog groomer – you could search #dogs, #doggrooming, #petgrooming to find the conversations you want to get involved in. We’d also suggest using your hometown airport code as a suffix to all your posts. It’s a good way to gain local followers.

4) Write Good, Creative, Useful Tweets

If you tweet about the root beer you had for breakfast – it’s not likely someone is going to be interested in what you have to say. However, if you tweet about exclusive discounts at your store to your Twitter followers – you may start to see some followers come in your door. Tweeting for charity is another classic example. A good way to save time with Twitter is to mix in some content from your favourite blogs – it’s easy and useful way to keep your bird tweeting.

5) Follow, Follow, Follow

When you follow someone, there’s a good chance they’ll follow you back. There’s a plethora of Twitter tools out there, many of which involve an auto-follow function. So follow as many people who are tweeting about the topic you find interesting – there’s a good chance 25-50% of them will follow you back.

The Power of Twitter

Twitter and Online MarketingLet’s face it; the point of Twitter is lost on a lot of people. Who the hell cares that Joe “just ordered a diet coke and is waiting for his Fat Burger cheeseburger”. I agree, there’s lots of useless crap on Twitter, but there are exceptions to every rule. A recent study broke down and categorized 2,000 tweets from the US in English, and here are their findings (Source Wikipedia):

• Pointless babble — 40%

• Conversational — 38%

• Pass-along value — 9%

• Self-promotion — 6%

• Spam — 4%

• News — 4%

Many businesses have started to understand the power of Twitter as a marketing tool – how so, you ask? Well have a look at this simple example.

As of October 2010, Lady Gaga is the most followed Twitterer with over 6.7 million followers. One tweet from her account reaches 6.7 million people immediately, and of those, thousands will re-tweet this message to their followers, and in a matter of minutes, this message will basically end up viewed 100+ million Twitter accounts.

Sure it takes time to create fans, but even a much smaller Twitter account with only 1000 fans has a far reach. Small businesses can really benefit, they can follow their competition, start conversations to generate new ideas for products and services and get their name out there by talking and helping current and future customers.

If you’re still unconvinced about the potential of Twitter, simply go to search.twitter.com, and type in your company name in the search. Are your customers talking about you? Next, type in keywords for your business, are people asking questions that your company could solve or fix?

Still don’t see the potential of Twitter? Wow, you really are stubborn…
